Wind chimes + bells on their own add a certain whimsical, playful, enchanting sense to a space, but coupled together + you have quite an exquisite little duo that is a combo of distinct beauty + originality. Renowned ecologist, designer, and architect named Paolo Soleri hailing from Italy who in 1947 spent a year-and-a-half in fellowship with Frank Lloyd Wright made beautiful windbells. Soleri came up with the idea of these iron and ceramic combinations of sculptures, chimes, + bells when working on a large scale ceramic project that led to his award-winning designs of windbells and siltcast architectural structures.
For over 30 years, the proceeds from the windbells have provided funds for construction to test his theoretical work at a site called Cosanti, that implements a methodology invented by Soleri combining architecture + ecology to produce a new type of urbanism based on a anti-urban sprawl. The movement is an offshoot of the “earthdome” terraced landscaping, large-scale-solar greenhouses, + experimental earth formed concrete structures that is reminiscent of something like mad-max, meets an earth-bound waterworld, mixed with Oswald’s 1984. These suspended works of art are beautiful + when coupled with other windbells or hanging pieces, can add a great texture to your home or outdoor space.
