Formosa 1140

Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects has created the dense, four-story, 11-unit structure, coined Formosa 1140, in West Hollywood having specific importance in creating almost a third of the 4,600-square-foot lot to be designated as shared public space for both residence + for the community. In pushing the building to one side of the lot, the architects ignored the traditional Southern California approach of placing a pool/court-yard combo in center of a stucco box, + instead created a park-like setting that ingeniously provides opportunities for access to day lighting, cross ventilation, carefully choreographed circulation, + playful voids + volumes. The pushing + pulling effect of the exterior skin, composed of corrugated/perforated-red panels, creates a whimsical dialogue of windows, decks, walkways, + patios that allows the circulation of the building to become a buffer for the private + public realms. We applaud Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects for seeking out new, practical design solutions in highly imaginative ways that employ sustainable practices while contributing to the enjoyment of the broader urban context in creating some spaces we would love to call home.-PJax
